School of Engineering and Computing Sciences third-year students Emmanuel Sanchez and Fabio Casagrande are traveling to Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, joining 38 other students from 30 universities for an intense weekend of seminars, lectures, and hands-on practice with the company’s engineers and innovators. 

 

NYIT’s Office of Career Services nominated Sanchez and Casagrande based on their activities and skills. This is the second consecutive year a student from NYIT is attending the event. Last year, Ramon Valentin was selected for the program.

 

“This program is designed for intelligent, driven, excellent sophomores and juniors in computer engineering/computer science who we hope wish to flourish and excel in a software development career,” said Brooke Simpson, a Microsoft university recruiter. “These are the brilliant minds we want to impact.” 

 

Casagrande, 26, (pictured at right) is a native of Pistoia, Italy, said he is looking forward to visiting the firm’s headquarters and meeting its employees. 

 

“After graduation, I would like to work as a software engineer for a big company like Microsoft,” he said.

 

Casagrande, who is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honor Society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), is already the inventor of a computer application for Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablet. His app, “Tuscany in Your Pocket," is a free travel guide for English-speaking tourists visiting the Tuscany region of Italy. 

 

Sanchez, a Bronx resident, is president of the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society and is on the President’s Honor List. He is an assistant manager at NYIT’s Academic Computing Services department. Last year, he was one of 15 students who spent 10 days in Independencia, Peru on an Alternative Spring Break project. Sanchez and other students helped build a pharmacy, cleaned beaches, and visited an orphanage. 

 

During the three-day Experience Microsoft event, students will see Microsoft’s “Tech Fest” showcase for new products, network with company representatives, dine at Seattle’s Space Needle, and tour Microsoft’s “Envisioning Center” to glimpse the company’s views of the world in 2018.
